The Outstretched Hand, Pentwyn, Cardiff
The Outstretched hand is a drop-in centre serving the people of Pentwyn. It is a friendly, welcoming place with facilities for all ages to relax, play and eat
In its early days, it was housed in a shop and easily accessible from the street. However, during a redevelopment of the shopping complex, it was rehoused in a purpose-built premises with better facilities ...but one draw-back. There was
no longer going to be a shop-front opening
onto the street.
Now the entrance is somewhat hidden around a corner, and the room is upstairs on the first floor. A lift provided the essential access for those with limited mobility - but it also hid the stairway and made the entrance rather forbidding.
How could people be encouraged to come in?
The answer was a mural along the corridor and stairway ...

... a procession of people ...

... of all shapes and sizes ...

... drawing others ...
... into the Outstretched Hand.
The mural was created by a team amateur artists from a local bank who came and spent a day painting life-size figures on the walls as part of a "Business in the Community" programme.
